Insulated Glass

IG: Insulated Glass Unit (aka dual/double-glazed): consists of two pieces of glass separated by a spacer and sealed together.

Insulated Glass Unit2 Types of Failure

1. Seal failure:  where the seal that separates the two panes of glass has failed                                  and moisture is collecting inside (most common type of failure)

2. Low-e coating failure:  as windows age, the Low-e coating on the inside                                                           surface of the glass may also start to deteriorate. It will often look                                                         as though there are moldy dark spots on the inside of the glass.

Regardless of your type of failure, this is an easy fix! Contact our office and we will schedule an appointment to measure the glass for replacement. We will provide you with an estimate for said replacement, and upon your approval the glass will be ordered.

***(Please allow 5-7 business days for standard insulated units, it may be a longer lead time depending on your brand of windows and preferences for the glass)***

Once the glass has arrived in our shop and been inspected for quality and correctness, you will be contacted to schedule the install.  It may seem like a bit of a process, but is a faster and more affordable alternative to whole window replacement.

Spacers: A spacer keeps a window’s glass panes the correct distance apart for optimal insulation to reduce heat flow. Too much or too little heat flow can affect the insulating glass efficiency. Warm edge spacers do not transmit as much heat as lower performing metal box spacers such as aluminum and thus reduce the likelihood of interior condensation along the glass edge along the window sill. Some spacers also reduce sound transmittance.

Argon Gas: Argon gas is a nontoxic and colorless gas that is denser than air. Argon gas is placed between panes to enhance thermal performance without obstructing views. *be aware that above certain elevations that Argon gas will expand causing the glass to crack and/or explode *

Dual or Triple Pane Insulated Glass: Many older windows were designed with single-pane glass. Energy efficient windows use dual or triple pane glass to better insulate and help reduce energy usage in the winter and protect against heat build-up during the summer.

Low-E: low-emissivity describes glass that has a solar control coating to improve thermal performance

4th Surface Low-E: Milgard now offers a 4th Surface energy package which adds an additional coating on the interior glass that substantially improves the energy performance.
